First off, a lot of you are probably wondering what a “Botnet Virus” is. Well, “Botnet” is an abbreviation for “Robot Network”. What happens is that a group of computers all run a harmful application that is solely controlled and manipulated by one owner or software source. The reasons for the creation of these are limited only to the knowledge of the creators, and no one really knows if they are for good or for evil! In the past, this has strictly been done only in computers, but recently it has found a way to make it into mobile devices, and it has been captured by NetQin!
The latest from our Mobile Security Center is that these Botnet viruses are being disguised as the hottest topics out there. For now, it’s the World Cup frenzy that’s going on, but it has also been seen as the “most popular blind date TV show”, amongst other hot topics.
Our team found that these Botnets do one of two things; send messages to all the contacts of the address book directly, or send messages to the random phone numbers by connecting to a server. The viruses will delete the sent messages from the user’s Outbox and SMS log. All messages contain URLs linked to malicious sites that users won’t be able to see until after they’ve fallen into the virus trap.
The Botnets seem to be targeting Symbian S60 3rd and 5th generation operating systems, and our Mobile Security Center estimates 100,000 mobile phones were impacted by them! Our antivirus database has been updated to include these new viruses. We are also working with operators to block the malicious URLs and prevent further spread.
So, to make the long story short, these new Botnet Viruses have started causing trouble on mobile devices. Our team at NetQin has managed to detect them and we’re getting together with operators to try and put a stop to them. Our virus database has been updated. So, make sure you update your virus database to be protected from the new Botnet generation of viruses!
Keep up the good work, I like your writing.
